Have you ever considered how balls of ice could come to plummet from the sky down to the ground? Such an astounding phenomenon deserves an explanation. If you’d like to learn more about the whole process, we have gone over the basics here.
Hail Formation Basics:
Did you know that hail only forms in thunder clouds, known by meteorologists as cumulonimbus clouds. Extremely powerful updrafts reach maximum speeds of up to 120 mph. These lift up precipitation in the clouds to layers of freezing atmosphere; the moisture freezes while also building up other layers of freezing moisture. Eventually, it gets so heavy that the updraft no longer can hold it up; it falls down as hailstones.
